Free crochet baby hat pattern!

I don’t know for you, but it’s getting cold here, that’s why I think it’s the perfect timing for this beautiful free beehive crochet baby hat pattern for babies.

As you know, I love these quick and easy projects. You can do a couple of these in one sitting. It’s a must for beginners because you only need sc and hdc back loop. And the hat is made from bottom-up, so you don’t need to crochet a circle (flat circle).

Plus I included a sizing chart to make this beehive beanie in several sizes (see below)…

Skill level: Easy / Beginner
Sizes: 0-3 months – 3-6 months – 6-12 months.

Can I make it in any size?

Yes, of course. You can do the beanie hat for all sizes.

How?

  1. Measure the head circumference or refer to the chart below, but the hat band is usually a shouter inches shorter than the head circumference by 3 cm/1 inch.
  2. Then make rows of sc in blo 9(hat band) until the strip reaches the desired length. For example I made 56 rows = 35 cm/14 inches (0- 3 months).
  3. Finally, look at the chart below (hat height) and Then reduce the length of the hat by 4 cm. For example: I made for size 0-3 m, right? which is 4.5 to 6 inches. I wanted to make the hat height 5.5 inches/14 cm, but we won’t make rounds until 14cm/5.5 inches, So we will make 14 – 4 = 10 cm. Now make rounds until you reach 10 cm, then we will decrease in hdc blo and make the right form of the hat.

Materials / Supplies:
You will need :
Stitches:
  • ch– chain
  • st/sts-stitch/stitches
  • sl st-slip stitch (Insert hook into stitch. Yarn over and pull through both the stitch and loop on the hook).
  • sc=single crochet (Insert hook into stitch. Yarn over pull through two loops).
  • blo=back loop only
  • 2tog– two stitches together
  • hdc-half double crochet
  • rep– repeat
Pattern Note:

-Ch 1 doesn’t count as a stitch, and the first stitch should be in the same stitch.

-Please count the stitches at the end of all rows / rounds.

-Repeat what is written in the () as many times as it’s written right after the (). For an example: Repeat (2hdc, hdc1) 5 times. It means that you have to repeat the sequence work 2 hdc sts into the same st. 1 hdc into the next one 5 times. And you will get 5 additional stitches by doing that.

Crochet Baby Hat Pattern:

To customize your baby hat, look at the chart above (hat height) and Then reduce the length of the hat by 4 cm. For example: I made for size 0-3 m, right? which is 4.5 to 6 inches. I wanted to make the hat height 5.5 inches/14 cm, but we won’t make rounds until 14cm/5.5 inches, So we will make 14 – 4 = 10 cm. Now make rounds until you reach 10 cm, then we will decrease and make the right form of the hat.

Let’s start.

Round 1: ch 1, hdc in next (place stitch marker on the first st), make regular hdc in each end-stitch of the hat band, sl st in the first st. (56 sts). The number of stitches (56 sts) should be the same number of rows from hatband (56 rows).

Round 2: ch 1 and turn your work, hdc in the same st in blo, make hdc in next each st in blo around, sl st in the first st. (56 sts)

Round 3-7: ch 1 and turn your work, hdc in the same st in blo, make hdc in next each st in blo around, sl st in the first st. (56 sts)

I make 7 rounds (14 – 4 = 10 cm) then we will make 5 rounds in hdc with decrease and it will be 14 cm/5.5 inches.

Round 9: ch 1 and turn your work, hdc in the same st blo, hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog in blo, now rep (hdc in next 3 sts, hdc2tog in blo) 9 times, hdc in next st, sl st in the first st. (38 sts)

Round 10: ch 1 and turn your work, hdc in the same st blo, hdc in next st, hdc2tog in blo, now rep (hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog in blo) 9 times, hdc in next st, sl st in the first st. (29 sts)

Round 11: ch 1 and turn your work, hdc in the same st blo, hdc2tog in blo, now rep (hdc in next 1 sts, hdc2tog in blo) 9 times, hdc in next st, sl st in the first st. (20 sts)

Round 12: ch 1 and turn your work, hdc2tog in blo, now rep (hdc2tog in blo) 10 times, sl st in the first st. (11 sts)

Fasten off, and keep a long tail so that we can sew with it.

CLOSING TOP

Using tapestry needle and strand of yarn leftover from previous seam, whip stitch around the top of the hat, working one whip stitch into each row. Tighten circle as much as possible and use tapestry needle to sew up any remaining opening in top of hat.

We are done!
