The pink baby hat story…

I made this baby hat a couple of months ago and sold it right away to a friend of mine. This was great, but I completely forgot to take a couple of nice pictures for the pattern and for the blog! I only took a picture of the baby hat along with the dress (see image below).

Then…

My (not so) big mistake…

A couple of weeks later, I decided to crochet another pink baby hat almost similar to this one, with a slightly different brim. I thought it would match the dress like the original one, and I wasn’t expecting that it would create so much confusion. I then added a link to the second hat’s pattern on the baby dress’ blog post. Some of my readers decided to crochet the dress and the (second) hat…

But… the second hat’s shape and brim were different from the one on the image.

My dumb mistake has cost me a three stars review on Etsy for the second hat, because of the different shape and brim. I know it’s not the end of the world because the review is actually positive…

“I found this pattern very easy to follow and make. Although I did make changes to the brim so it would match dress that I made.”

…but it was my very first review, and I was desperately waiting for my first five stars! Lol.

Crochet pink baby hat

This baby hat – or if you choose to crochet the complete baby dress set – will make a perfect baby shower gift.

It’s an easy baby hat, it works up in two hours or less. It’s perfect for beginners because I’ve used a basic crochet stitch, the double crochet stitch.

Skill level: Easy/Medium/Beginners

Sizes: 0-3 months

Can I make it in any size?

Yes, you can crochet beanie hat for all sizes, with any hook or yarn easily.

How can I crochet a hat for any size?

  1. First make a crochet circle (the flat circle) by making rounds until you reach the right size of the hat crown. For example: I made 5 rounds = 12 cm/ 4.72 inch for baby size 0-3 months.
  2. Then follow the pattern and make rounds until you reach the right size of hat height. For example : the hat height for baby 0-3 months is 11 .5 to 15.5 cm, right? I made 6 to 12 rounds = 14 cm/ 5.5 inch.

Materials / Supplies:
You will need :

Abbreviations(US Terms):
  • Ch= chain.
  • St/sts=stitch/stitches.
  • Sl st=slip stitch
  • Sc=single crochet (Insert hook into stitch. Yarn over pull through two loops).
  • Dc=double crochet (Yarn over. Insert hook into stitch. Yarn over pull through stitch. Yarn over pull through two loops. Yarn over pull through two loops).
  • V= V stitch
  • Shell stitch (6 Dc) all in the same stitch ( ch space)
  • Rep=repeat.
  • Sk=skip

Pattern Notes:

-Chain 3 doesn’t count as a stitch, and the first stitch should be worked into the same Stitch.

-We always join rounds with sl st in the 3rd chain.

-If the number is written before the stitch (2 Dc) work 2 Dc into the same stitch. If the number is written after the stitch (Dc 2) work Dc into next 2 stitches.

-Repeat what is written in the () as many times as it’s written right after the (). For an example: Repeat (2 Dc, Dc1) 5 times. It means that you have to repeat the sequence work 2 Dc sts into the same st. 1 Dc into the next one 5 times. And you will get 5 additional stitches by doing that.

-Make sure you check your gauge via the measurements above to be sure your hat fits the child you’re making it for perfectly.

-In rounds (2-5) we always finish with 2 Dc at the end.

For the hat you stated that Ch 3 is not counted as a stitch. So what do we do with it?

    1. Soukaina

      Hello Dolly,
      Thank you for comment.
Exactly, the ch 3 doesn’t count as a stitch because the first stitch should be in the same stitch. You will close rounds with slip stitch in the 3rd ch!
In other words, in the pattern I wrote how many sts in the brackets (), right?
For example, in round 2: (24 sts) you should counts the stitches except for the ch 3, in this pattern ch 3 is only used to close rounds.
      I hope it makes sense?

Hi , for the hat, I am already confused with instructions.
“ If the number is written before the stitch (2dc) work 2hdc into the same stitch. If the number is written after the stitch (dc 2) work hdc into next 2 stitches.” Is this a typo or do you really mean replacing the dc with hdc? If so not understanding why hdc just couldn’t be in the ( ) from the get go. Waiting for your response so I can get started on this beautiful hat 😊

      Hi Sherri!

      Thank you for your comment.
Sorry, it was a mistake! I mean dc not hdc.

      Thank you.
      Have a nice day!

      Soukaina.
